Since 2017 I have been painting small works in oil on panel that draw on my interest in Italian Renaissance art. They feature couples and small groups in unclothed encounters or skirmishes in pastoral settings, and my nudes are reconfigured from artistic and art-historical sources from the distant past almost to the present day. They are furnished with new roles and dynamic relationships that are often the antithesis of their original context. With these paintings, I am in an ongoing dialogue with the artists and image-makers who produced this source material, trying to understand their compositional, thematic and aesthetic motivations and decision-making processes, as well as my own.
